3D is here to stay. Unfortunately.

April 26, 2012

Sad news, film fans – Martin Scorsese says the future of film is in 3D. Ugh.

“The moment (film) started, people wanted three things: color, sound and depth,” Marty said in a panel discussion with fellow director Ang Lee yesterday at the annual CinemaCon theater-owners convention in Las Vegas.

Scorsese says that it was a liberating challenge to film Hugo with that extra dimension that reminded him of looking into a View Master. “There was something that transported you to another world,” he says. And he reports that audiences told him how much they liked being in that world.

Lee, whose upcoming  Life Of Pi is being shot in 3D, says the movie business is at “the breaking point of taking 3D seriously.” Although filmmakers still need to find excuses to make a movie in 3D, “someday we won’t need that,” he predicts.

Far be it from me to argue with two of my favourite filmmakers in the world but… really?

What do you think?
